The Best of Marbella expanded to The Best of the World Network (r)

The former secretary general of the UN - Mr Kofi Annan in Marbella

Marbella, Costa del Sol in Spain is seen as one of the most popular tourism hotspots in the world, however, there is 'much more than a wonderful climate, glamour, luxury and famous parties.

This article is inspired by the two original articles from:

World Conference on Climate Change and Wine and
Kofi Annan addresses the world

Over 800 participants attended the recent talk by Kofi Annan at The 3rd World Conference on Climate Change and Wine from 13-14 April in The Palacio de Congreso in Marbella. Marbella was the  chosen venue by the Wine Academy of Spain to present the largest and widest selection of fine wines with an inspiring collection of speakers on the subject of climate change in the business of winemaking.
Pancho Campo MW, Kofi Annan and the mayoress of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz

Since the end of his secretary post in the United Nations in 2006, Kofi Annan has been devoted to the protection and development of social causes all over the world. The former Secretary-General has been championing the importance of economic, social and environmental sustainability throughout his career at the United Nations. He believes this is the key to “reduce the environmental impact for future generations”.

The climate change challenge was the main focus of Mr. Annan’s speech on the first day of the III World Congress on Climate Change and Wine. Mr Annan’s conference was titled “The Global Compact: A challenge in the business word to become leaders in sustainable development” (13th of April. 18.00 h.) and was introduced by Pancho Campo MW.

The conference was directed to the Business community on the Coast and focuses on the importance of adapting to sustainable measures in order to deal with climate change. The conference was open to businessmen and the general public. After the conference there wias a 30 minute session of questions and answers with the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize winner. On the evening of April 13th, Kofi Annan and his wife joined the mayoress of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz and attended the official dinner, that took  place in La Cabane, Hotel Los Monteros. This dinner wias held in aid of the charity Vicente Ferrer Foundation.

Last November in a climate change conference in Switzerland, Mr Annan explained the impact of this phenomenon in sectors where high irrigation is needed, such as agriculture or farming: “The gradual increase in temperature is producing in increase in the seawater. This causes more floods and less frost”, which is crucial for the growth of some grape varieties. In this speech, the Secretary-General will reiterate the responsibility of businesses and individuals to address environmental challenges; undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility; protect human rights; and encourage the development and transfer of environmentally-sustainable technologies.

A report released by the Forum in May of 2009 estimated that climate change is responsible for the deaths of 300,000 people every year, with 325 million of the poorest suffering most. All its work ultimately aims to be of benefit to the most vulnerable, particularly those living in least developed countries. In an address to the World Economic Forum in 1999, he challenged business leaders to join an international initiative – the Global Compact – that would bring companies together with UN agencies, as well as labour and civil society, to promote and respect universal environmental and social principles.

This III World Congress on Climate Change and Wine (http://www.cambioclimaticoyvino.com/) will rely on professionals in this field who have already begun implementing new concepts in Spain and abroad.  In order to fight climate change, Campo believes that we need to focus on two issues: one of prevention, which would aid in diminishing CO2 emissions as well as energy costs; and mitigation and adaptation directed specifically to vineyards and wineries.

The Wine Academy of Spain is a private organization founded in 2003 by Pancho Campo MW, the first Spaniard to hold the title Master of Wine. It focuses its activities on the education of wine professionals and amateurs; the international promotion of Spanish wine through its Spanish Wine Experience; the promotion of Spain as a destination for wine tourism; the analysis of the impact of climate change on the industry; and study trips to wine producing regions with the collaboration of the University of California Davis (US). It is also an Approved Programme Provider for the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET), which it promulgates in Spain; has organised the internationally-acclaimed conferences Climate Change & Wine, Wine Future-Rioja ’09, and Vinoble Jerez 2010.

Stephen Lloyd-Morgan with The Marbella Concert Orchestra
The Summer Event Concerts - El Castillo de la Duquesa

For a chance to win tickets supplied by event sponsor Ibex Insurance please go to www.ibexinsure.com/summerconcert-competition - closing date 30th June.

Following the phenomenal success of The Summer Event Concert last year; reviewed as “World Class entertainment delivered direct to our door step”; this Summer there will be two concerts inside the magnificent and intimate setting of El Castillo de la Duquesa on Saturday 24th July & Saturday 21st August, sponsored and supported by Ibex Insurance, Essential Marbella Magazine, Talk Radio Europe, Sur In English & Fischer Car Group among others, and in collaboration with the Ayuntamiento de Manilva.

The concerts will star popular tenor Stephen Lloyd-Morgan with the new and specially formed 16-piece Marbella Concert Orchestra, conducted by renowned Musical Director Ian Green, with a selection of songs from Musical Theatre, Opera and Cross-Over, sung in English, Italian and Spanish.

Special guest artists also bringing an eclectic and contemporary repertoire to the event include Yazz, International Recording Artist; Julie-Anne Hunter, Mezzo Soprano ENO & Royal Festival Hall; María Lourdes Benítez, Soprano El Coro de Ópera de Málaga and Spain´s WOW Factor Winner and Runner-up, Christian Fa & Rebecca Tate, and The Unity Gospel Singers.

Event organiser Nick Holland said, “We are very excited about bringing the Marbella Concert Orchestra to accompany Steve at this year´s concerts in Duquesa. We are also delighted that Yazz, who very rarely performs in Spain, has agreed to join the special guest line-up. The costs incurred by bringing a live orchestra, as well as a more spectacular sound and lighting show, (Nigel Davis – Soto Events) has resulted in an increase in ticket price this year. But we are certain the sweeping improvements we have made since last year to both the content and staging of the concerts will be appreciated by the audiences and we hope this will lead to another very unique and successful event!”

Tickets, €40, will go on sale from 9th June, from Beccy´s, Monte Duquesa; Christina´s Cards, Sabinillas; Glitterati Books, Centro Diana Benavista & Anglo Wines, Sotogrande or call 697 783 942. Ticket numbers are strictly limited at this venue and last year was sold out several weeks before the concert! All tickets must be prepaid, although available for collection on the door.

Doors & Bar Open from 8.00pm - 1.00am
Steve´s first performance with The Marbella Concert Orchestra will be at the prestigious 10th Anniversary Max Clifford Celebrity Butterfly Ball Gala in aid of The Rhys Daniels Trust at the Hotel Puente Romano on 5th June. Later this summer he will record a new album with the Orchestra as well as performing with them in Madrid and Barcelona.

Manifesto Design news

Find out what we’re up to at Manifesto Design

The global economy is still finding its way to recovery but our focus is firmly fixed ahead. We’re happy to say that the start to 2010 has been very decent and the prospects ahead look even better.

A combination of exciting new projects and treasured longer standing clients keep us busy with a welcome variety of work that includes creative design and branding, editorial work, creating and providing content for websites, SEO-driven blog texts and of course making magazines from scratch. To this list we are now adding a professional translation service that includes just about every language known to man. Would have to get back to you on Amharic though.

Villae International’s Spring 2010 edition is out!
The fifth edition of the Villae International Magazine is out now. This luxury publication, produced by the European Real Estate Network (EREN), features the finer things in life and takes a look at travel, art, culture, interesting personalities and luxury lifestyle in the stylish and understated way that is typical of this most exclusive of European property collectives.

The magazine is the brainchild of leading EREN members José Ribes Bas of Inmobiliaria Rimontgó in Valencia and Diana Morales of DM Properties in Marbella, though by its very nature EREN is an international organisation with members in Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, Portugal, Greece and affiliated members in France, the US and other parts of the globe.

In a collaboration that goes back several years now, Manifesto Design works closely with the production team headed by EREN president José Ribes to produce the editorial content and photographical material for the publication, which finds its way into some of the most distinguished locations in Europe.
Languages We Love!
Do you remember the Babel fish that featured in Douglas Adams’ The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy? All you had to do was drop one in your ear and proficiency in all the languages of the universe would be yours.

Isn’t that a great thought? Unfortunately we can’t boast anything quite as amazing as the Babel fish, but we can now offer our clients a top quality translation service. Having recently joined forces with a long-established international translation agency, with offices in Manchester, and Ronda, we are confident we can fulfil all your translation needs, from any language into any other, through our professional contacts worldwide.

We guarantee a fast response to enquiries and a rapid turn-around of work. All our translations are done by native speakers and checked by a third party to ensure top quality and accuracy. We’ve all seen some hilarious translation howlers and mangled syntax, but such errors are unacceptable for professionals who wish to impress their clients. Contact us for a free quote.

Quantum Spain
During the past few weeks we’ve designed and written the content for the new Quantum Mortgages website. When a company needs to create an online profile from scratch, you would be surprised at how much work needs to be done to provide visitors with all the necessary information.

In the case of Quantum we were given the task of not only designing an attractive and functional website supported by effective SEO, but also explaining the way in which property finance works. This included creating a mortgage calculator from scratch and linking the site to the latest Euribor rates. The site also includes a blog for client information and participation, and the entire project is fully SEO optimised.

Of course, any website worth its Google position is only as good as its maintenance programme so, as with all of our web-based projects, Quantum Mortgages’ website will require regular monitoring and updating.
British Chamber of Commerce
During the past few months we have been socialising more than ever. Earlier this year we launched our Facebook and Twitter presences but, not content with virtual networking, we have also joined the British Chamber of Commerce in Spain. Along with companies such as Lloyd’s TSB, Hackett, BT, Sotheby’s and Ernst & Young, Manifesto Design will be able to enjoy the benefits of belonging to one of the world’s ultimate business promoters.

Revamped text for David Toms’ website
Cool photographer David Toms asked us to update his website text and that is exactly what we did. A man of few words but images that speak volumes, David left it to us to illustrate his amazing portfolio and convey the passion he has for photography.

Promote Goodwill.org

Wouldn't you like to see everyone, everywhere embrace the concepts of peace and nonviolence? Okay, now prove it! What if I told you that you could promote the peacebuilding paradigm without having to leave the comfort of your own home? No signs to make, no marches to organize and attend, no speeches to make. What if you could do it from where you are sitting right now... Here's the tip... Whenever you run across content on the internet that promotes the peacebuilding ideas that you like (like this one), forward it further:  submit it to Reddit or Digg, re-tweet it in Twitter, share it on Facebook, e-mail it to friends or promote it in whatever way you usually promote content you like. Most authors make this easy to do by including a "Share" link somewhere on the post.

With a little more effort, you can help shift the global conversation toward peacebuilding by commenting on articles and blog posts, letting people know about DoPeace, the campaign to create a U.S. Department of Peace, and the Youth PROMISE act.

Goodwill is a contagious and potent energy.  By its means, peace can eventually be established on earth.  Through its intelligently applied use the dynamics of human interaction can be positively changed in a short period of time.  PromoteGoodwill.org is focused on practical methods for spreading this powerful force throughout humanity, in every region of the world.  With the co-operation of men and women of goodwill across the globe this energy will stream into the hearts of people in all departments of life, affecting the change necessary to achieve peace.  This is PromoteGoodwill.org's primary purpose - promoting goodwill through training and education."

The immediate spiritual problem with which all are faced, is the problem of gradually offsetting hate and initiating the new technique of trained, imaginative, creative and practical goodwill.

"Goodwill is man's first attempt to express the love of God.  Its results on earth will be peace.  It is so simple and practical that people fail to appreciate its potency or its scientific and dynamic affect.  One person sincerely practicing goodwill in a family, can completely change its attitudes. Goodwill really practiced among groups in any nation, by political and religious parties in any nation, and among the nations of the world, can revolutionize the world". Problems of Humanity, by Alice A. Bailey

Tips on Promoting Goodwill

Below we have listed some things we all can do daily ( and do much better ) toward helping foster a greater measure of Right Human Relations with all our relationships.  Whether or not you become actively involved with PromoteGoodwill.org you can help pursue this vision by Promoting Goodwill as you go about your daily affairs.  Promoting Goodwill is easy and really only takes a conscious effort on our part to adjust our speech, thoughts, mannerisms and tolerances.  And to approach each interactive situation with a co-operative heart...and a display of harmlessness.  How many of us actually try consciously to interact each and every day with a spirit of harmlessness in our thoughts, words and actions?  Thoughts are directed energy - construct ones that are positive - yes, even when it is difficult.  This is what we mean by conscious effort.  When we begin to try consciously to effect our every day surroundings positive things take place.  Attitudes at home and work change for the better.  We are not saying you are going to be perfect every day in your conscious endeavor to Promote Goodwill.  What we hope to achieve is to demonstrate a greater degree of harmlessness - a greater measure of Right Human Relations through our daily activities.  If you believe you are being efficient 20% of your day in your Goodwill Promotion efforts, try for 30% - 40%.  This is what we are trying to accomplish here - lots of people doing their best to achieve a greater measure of harmlessness in their lives.  Please read some of the thoughts listed below - they are in no particular order.

1. Don't criticize others, directly or indirectly.
2. Be less confrontational over differences.
3. Don't think bad thoughts about others - remember energy follows thought!
4. Help where you can help - make those sacrifices on behalf of others - physically, emotionally, and mentally.
5. Meet others halfway - you can do this more than you think!
6. Be less prone to argue - how many arguments are over truly stupid things?
7. Be more tolerant of other's opinions, viewpoints, beliefs, religions, national and racial cultures.
8. Don't hesitate to be supportive.
9. Don't force your will or beliefs on others - remember...just because we believe something doesn't make us right, or mean it is the only possibility, truth or answer!
10. Watch your word usage - some words just aren't necessary!
11. Negotiate business transactions with a spirit of co-operative goodwill.
12. Try and resolve disputes with your adversaries - be more understanding of the positions of others.
13. Conduct business with an attitude of giving and sharing rather than one of taking.
14. Touch others with a kind gesture for no reason.
15. Make it obvious you are a role model for the promotion of goodwill in your family, work environment and community and as a result others will want to be around you and look to you for help and support - you are contagious!

Helping Haiti - HM The Queen acknowledges Costa del Sol `Help Haiti Campaign´.
Her Majesty The Queen has sent her best wishes for the continued success of the Costa del Sol´s fundraising efforts for Haiti. A letter received from Buckingham Palace reads `Her Majesty was interested to learn that the British expatriate community in the Costa del Sol have raised over €20,000 for the Haiti Earthquake Fund... Her Majesty conveys warm good wishes to you and all concerned´.

Eleven of the Costa del Sols finest singers banded together in collaboration with Rowetta on Saturday 13th February, and with just 4 days notice, and a month after the devastating earthquake, to record a charity single for Haiti at one of Europe´s top International Studios based in Marbella. Predominately widely unknown artists, and in cases raw talent; the first line and Italian duet sung by 15 year old Rebecca Tate. Banding together simply for the cause to help the people of Haiti, and on zero budget; a world away from the corporate music industry, we believe it has still resulted in a remarkable achievement.
A cover version of Céline Dion and Andrea Bocelli´s highly emotional song “The Prayer”, which won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song from the film Quest for Camelot in 1999; this charity version renamed “The Prayer for Haiti”. The single is initially released as an internet download only, royalty free, by kind permission of writers David Foster, Carole Bayer Sager & Andrea Bocelli.

This recording, parts sung in Italian, English and also Spanish, is a fantastic eclectic mix of singing styles, and features ITV´s X Factor finalist Rowetta, now acclaimed Tenor Stephen Lloyd-Morgan, Spain´s 15 year old WoWFactor runner-up Rebecca Tate, the equally brilliant voices of Mayte, Daniel Boland, The Unity Gospel Singers and the popular classical group Tres Divos.

Produced by Nick Holland & Stephen Lloyd-Morgan in association with Maurice Boland of Talk Radio Europe and Essential Marbella Magazine; they were inspired to record this single after the overwhelming response to Stephen & Rebecca singing The Prayer at The Gala Dinner for Haiti held at La Quinta Golf on 5th February organised by Maurice. A YouTube Video of the song also received over 500 hits in just a few days! You can view the video below:
The phenomenal generosity of so many has once again shown no bounds, allowing this single to be recorded, produced and promoted totally free. 100% of the proceeds from sales will go directly to the Ark Christian Fellowship, a part of the Child Care Ministries, which has had a presence in Haiti for over 8 years. Some valuable comments from Antonia Muñoz – Alcaldesa de Manilva (Mayor of Manilva) – “The Prayer for Haiti”

“We are extremely proud and would very much like to convey our congratulations to the producers of the charity single (CD) `The Prayer for Haiti´. Resident British Expatriates from the Municipality of Manilva, Stephen Lloyd-Morgan and Nick Holland, have recorded this single in collaboration with Talk Radio Europe and Essential Marbella Magazine, to help the desperate orphans of Haiti and they hope to raise enough to build a new school. We very much commend their efforts and that of the entire expatriate community who are banding together to raise much needed funds for this worthy cause through the sale of this single(CD).” – 4th March 2010

Valuable comments from Jose Luis Hernández – Tourist Councilor Marbella Town hall regarding
“The Prayer for Haiti”

“Marbella City Council considers that the expat community is giving us an example of generosity and commitment in view of the magnitude of the devastation suffered by Haiti. Marbella can feel proud because —even in these moments of economic crisis— our society, and particularly our expat community, is giving such an evident proof of commitment with the suffering of human beings that did not have anything before the tragedy and, after it, the only thing they have is pain and hopelessness. We hope your fund raising initiative be as successful as possible. On behalf of Marbella City Council, receive our most sincere thanks and our acknowledgement for your humanitarian work.” – 4th March 2010

Dave Jackson: sings the classics

Dave Jackson, originally from London (Walthamstow born and bred, the land of such famous people as Iain Drury and the Blockheads and of course E17), started his musical career by playing Bass guitar and singing with a band who called themselves "The Force" (way ahead of their time with regard to Star Wars "May the force be with you"). The band was set up with school mates from the local secondary modern school "Chapel End" and played local British legion clubs and school gigs. At the same time as "Gigging" David was working nightclubs and various venues in the south east with a company called "Goodhews" with such now infamous people as "Peter Young" and "Dale Winton".

Whilst most of the "DJ's" went on to train at various local radios stations, David went to live in Australia in 1974 where he started his career on radio working in Queensland and later main stream AM and FM radios stations in the city of Brisbane; Sydney and Melbourne.

It wasn't until the introduction of Karaoke in the 80's that David really started to get into singing professionally, and went into session backing singing recording with Ozzy artists like "Kylie Minogue"; "Jason Donavon" "John Farnham" Crowded house (then split Enz) and many others, gaining a huge respect as a backing singer.

He was then offered a role that he couldn't turn down as "entertainments manager" singer and general all round entertainer in Australia's premier ski resort "THREDBO" working there from 1981 to 1992.

After a few years in the bar and restaurant industry, David moved to the Costa Del Sol to build a lovely Spanish Villa close to Marbella, where he entertained at literally hundreds of private weddings; parties; and functions; in addition to many of the Cost Del Sols finest restaurants and Time share resorts.

In 2007, David was one of the main presenters on a new and exciting TV project called "Living in Spain TV" which broadcast on Sky Digital channel 293, and made 2 series of programmes. One was an expat discussion programme called "Shut up I'm talking" and the other, an interview show called "Personally speaking with Dave Jackson" where he interviewed many famous and non famous people living on the Costa Del Sol.

David and his family are now based in the sleepy but beautiful Devonshire town of Totnes, but commutes to venues to sing in London; most of the UK and many European resorts including the Costa Del Sol. For a sample of Davids voice quality log on to http://www.x-factory.tv/ and click around the music pages "Old Joys Bar" and "Rehearsal rooms" and if you are having a high quality function and need professional entertainment, then please either email David at davejackson177@gmail.com or simply call 44 781 188 8801.

Stephen Lloyd-Morgan highlights and updates

Busy Diary of Concerts Planned for 2010

“December proved another hectic month for increasingly acclaimed Tenor Stephen Lloyd-Morgan. From the Marbella Awards at the Hotel Puente Romano, The Talk Radio Europe Telethon for Cudeca, The Christmas Concert in Sotogrande, right through to Christmas Day at The Marbella Club; just to mention some of the highlights!

Steve´s Manager Nick Holland says, `Despite the economic climate we could not have been more delighted with the fantastic response we received to all the Concerts staged last year. It is perhaps seen as a PR gimmick to continually state that these Concerts were all `SOLD-OUT´ but those who attended or sought tickets will know they genuinely were!

The positive feedback received has been overwhelming, and for as long as audiences continue to support us and demand the varied programmes of entertainment we have planned, then we will strive to make these Concerts bigger, better and more spectacular.

The major highlights for us last year were most certainly The Summer Event at El Castillo de la Duquesa, where we plan to stage a series of concerts this summer, and The Autumn Concert for Cudeca with The London Welsh Male Voice Choir. Steve is already looking forward to singing with the 75 strong Pontarddulias Male Choir in March.´” – Andalucia Life Magazine January 2010

In memoriam of one of the best Argentine-Spanish footballers and coach Don Alfredo Di Stefano. The world has lost the famous footballer on 7 July 2014, widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all times. Don Alfredo Di Stefano was most associated with Real Madrid and was instrumental in their domination of the European Champions' Cup during the 1950s. Don Alfredo Di Stéfano played international football mostly for Spain, but he also played for Argentina and Colombia. We will greatly miss Don Alfredo... Argentina can be very proud of this amazing man.

Alejandro Vega Martinelli and Maria Petrak, Founder of The Best of the World Network had the great honor to visit the Veterans of Real Madrid and the unique opportunity to meet Don Alfredo di Stefano in person in 2009.

Special edition of C+Golf
C+Golf, the golfer’s edition of Caché+ Magazine, is another of the titles produced at Manifesto Design in close conjunction with publisher William fforde and his team at Beckenham Publishing.

The current edition highlights the Volvo Matchplay tournament at Finca Cortesin, near Marbella, as well as being the launch issue of the magazine in Dubai – ensuring this serious golfer’s title is now also distributed in this burgeoning region.

Avril campaign
One of our new clients – Fortunes by Avril – brought us a completely different project to focus on. A highly popular clairvoyant, Avril has been working from the Trafford Centre in Manchester for several years.
In October she visited Marbella for the Mind, Body & Spirit Festival, and we prepared her corporate and marketing material, producing cards, flyers, banners and a pop-up screen, as well as organising photography, writing press releases and promoting her.

Blanco Design
Having streamlined the branding of Ben Nott’s architectural practice, we also worked closely with him to produce content and give shape to his new website. It was also a pleasure to arrange and art direct a photo-shoot of one of his stunning new projects in Gibraltar – the exclusive private member’s club 55.

A view to die for
Just to prove it’s not all work, and that sometimes the job does live up to its glamorous reputation, in September we went on a press trip to Rome during which we were invited to stay at the lovely Rome Cavalieri hotel. A beautifully appointed suite with a private balcony overlooking Rome by night was certainly the stuff to inspire impassioned writing.

Valencia tour
In October we visited our clients and indeed friends at Rimontgó in Valencia, where we contribute to Reality Sense, one of the leading lifestyle blogs on the web. On behalf of Reality Sense, (created by this leading international specialist in luxury real estate), we have interviewed personalities as varied as Spanish league football players, famous food and art critics, leading interior designers, businesspeople and the architect who designed the Hotel Bali in Benidorm (tallest in Europe) and taught Santiago Calatrava at Valencia University.
Check the site out for articles about a wide variety of topics that are updated on a daily basis.
