The former secretary general of the UN - Mr Kofi Annan in Marbella

Marbella, Costa del Sol in Spain is seen as one of the most popular tourism hotspots in the world, however, there is 'much more than a wonderful climate, glamour, luxury and famous parties.

World Conference on Climate Change and Wine and
Kofi Annan addresses the world

Over 800 participants attended the recent talk by Kofi Annan at The 3rd World Conference on Climate Change and Wine from 13-14 April in The Palacio de Congreso in Marbella. Marbella was the  chosen venue by the Wine Academy of Spain to present the largest and widest selection of fine wines with an inspiring collection of speakers on the subject of climate change in the business of winemaking.
Pancho Campo MW, Kofi Annan and the mayoress of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz

Since the end of his secretary post in the United Nations in 2006, Kofi Annan has been devoted to the protection and development of social causes all over the world. The former Secretary-General has been championing the importance of economic, social and environmental sustainability throughout his career at the United Nations. He believes this is the key to “reduce the environmental impact for future generations”.

The climate change challenge was the main focus of Mr. Annan’s speech on the first day of the III World Congress on Climate Change and Wine. Mr Annan’s conference was titled “The Global Compact: A challenge in the business word to become leaders in sustainable development” (13th of April. 18.00 h.) and was introduced by Pancho Campo MW.

The conference was directed to the Business community on the Coast and focuses on the importance of adapting to sustainable measures in order to deal with climate change. The conference was open to businessmen and the general public. After the conference there wias a 30 minute session of questions and answers with the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize winner. On the evening of April 13th, Kofi Annan and his wife joined the mayoress of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz and attended the official dinner, that took  place in La Cabane, Hotel Los Monteros. This dinner wias held in aid of the charity Vicente Ferrer Foundation.

Last November in a climate change conference in Switzerland, Mr Annan explained the impact of this phenomenon in sectors where high irrigation is needed, such as agriculture or farming: “The gradual increase in temperature is producing in increase in the seawater. This causes more floods and less frost”, which is crucial for the growth of some grape varieties. In this speech, the Secretary-General will reiterate the responsibility of businesses and individuals to address environmental challenges; undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility; protect human rights; and encourage the development and transfer of environmentally-sustainable technologies.

A report released by the Forum in May of 2009 estimated that climate change is responsible for the deaths of 300,000 people every year, with 325 million of the poorest suffering most. All its work ultimately aims to be of benefit to the most vulnerable, particularly those living in least developed countries. In an address to the World Economic Forum in 1999, he challenged business leaders to join an international initiative – the Global Compact – that would bring companies together with UN agencies, as well as labour and civil society, to promote and respect universal environmental and social principles.

This III World Congress on Climate Change and Wine (http://www.cambioclimaticoyvino.com/) will rely on professionals in this field who have already begun implementing new concepts in Spain and abroad.  In order to fight climate change, Campo believes that we need to focus on two issues: one of prevention, which would aid in diminishing CO2 emissions as well as energy costs; and mitigation and adaptation directed specifically to vineyards and wineries.

The Wine Academy of Spain is a private organization founded in 2003 by Pancho Campo MW, the first Spaniard to hold the title Master of Wine. It focuses its activities on the education of wine professionals and amateurs; the international promotion of Spanish wine through its Spanish Wine Experience; the promotion of Spain as a destination for wine tourism; the analysis of the impact of climate change on the industry; and study trips to wine producing regions with the collaboration of the University of California Davis (US). It is also an Approved Programme Provider for the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET), which it promulgates in Spain; has organised the internationally-acclaimed conferences Climate Change & Wine, Wine Future-Rioja ’09, and Vinoble Jerez 2010.

The Olive Press newspaper

The Olive press and the Green Guide (Guia Verde)
Andalucia’s fortnightly news publication

The Olive press is one of the Best of Marbella business associates that focuses on the ecological and green topics that offer top quality content and useful information for anyone who is environmentally conscious. All members and clients of the Best of Marbella are offered a very special 10% discount for advertising.

Origins of the Olive Press
The Olive Press was launched in May 2006, as an English-speaking newspaper to serve the expatriate population of Granada province. Printed fortnightly, it began with a print run of 4,000 copies. With an increasing foreign population in Granada alone, the paper was soon able to increase its print run to 7,000 copies, allowing us to deliver 14,00o copies per month, giving a conservative readership base of around 50,000 people each month.

In November 2006 former Fleet Street journalist Jon Clarke and co-owner of the paper, published the first issue of the Olive Press Western Edition, based in Ronda, and covering the provinces of Malaga, Cordoba, Cadiz and Sevilla. Set up under a separate company, the two editions collaborated successfully, exchanging editorial copy and setting up a joint website.

In just eight months the Western Edition grew from 3,500 to 8,000 copies and from 32 to 40 pages. Since the beginning of 2009 the total has risen sharply again, to 12,000 copies per issue. With his ten years’ experience at the Daily Mail, Mirror and Telegraph, among others, Jon Clarke has assembled a team of talented writers around the region, who continue to break numerous hard-hitting stories.

Over the last year, many of Spain's top foreign writers have written for the Olive Press. These include Driving Over Lemons author Chris Stewart, Telegraph writer and Factory of Light author Michael Jacobs, Duende writer Jason Webster and the Guardian's correspondent in Madrid Giles Tremlett.

The paper has gone from strength to strength starting numerous new sections, such as La Cultura, geared around the region's many interesting cultural events, the All About series spotlighting various towns and areas around the region, and specials such as Health and Beauty and Finance and Banking. The paper can now provide editorial support to advertisers with its Business Profile section.

In 2008 the Olive Press launched its first Green Guide, the region’s first and only comprehensive listings of all ecological and ‘green’ friendly companies.

The website http://www.theolivepress.es/ has become one of the key focuses of the Olive Press. In March 2009 we relaunched the site, partly based on the New York Times, and partly on the Guardian and Daily Mail's excellent UK websites. The busy news website is now listed as the most important news website in Andalucia according to Google. The website is updated daily and currently achieves a traffic of around 1500 to 1800 “unique visitors” a day (these are people who specifically choose to log onto the Olive Press website. This means up to 60,000 “unique” visitors a month, with hundreds of thousands more visiting via other sites. So, what does our paper contain?

· Regional and local news exclusive features from our network of correspondents
· Well-written feature articles by established journalists
· Original photos by professional photographers
· National and international current affairs supplied by various press agencies
· Resources for learning Spanish and integrating into the culture
· Expert legal, financial and property advice columns
· A comprehensive listings and events calendar

· Each issue contains 32 pages and we pride ourselves in an even balance of interesting articles and adverts, making it a highly readable paper. We plan to expand further in 2009.
· In support of our paper, we have a highly successful website, read all over the English speaking world, ranked 102,925 in the top five million global websites. (Data issued by Alexa.com that provides independent website traffic ranking analysis). It has around 35,000 “unique” visitors a month. All issues of the paper appear on this site as downloadable PDFs opening up advertisers to a worldwide audience.
· We are able to offer advertisers appearing in the newspaper a special rate for website advertising on our highly successful website, http://www.theolivepress.es/.

This means that advertisers, whatever their market, can benefit from a huge catchment audience.

· We are a free newspaper, which means that we are stocked in a wider range of establishments than many of the newspaper publications that are chargeable.

· Our advertising has risen by more than 320% in the last six months; statistical proof which demonstrates advertisers believe we are a successful tool in increasing business – please refer to our advertiser testimonials. But we still have managed a high ratio of news items and features to adverts.
· We pride ourselves upon the high ratio of quality news items and features to advertisements, compared to the majority of our competitors, it means that any advertisement will stand out more in our publication, which can only mean a higher success rate for any business. This balance is one that we take very seriously and one that we are committed to long term.
· Additionally, due to our limited number of advertisements, the prime advertising slots soon sell out. This means that by advertising now, any advertiser will be able to get ahead of their competitors by holding onto a prime position and keeping it.
· As many of our readers are well travelled and still show a keen interest in travelling, this is a prime advertising medium for travel and tourism related businesses to promote themselves in other regions of Spain and even overseas, in addition to within Andalucia.

The most important factor of a carbon project is that it establishes that it would not have occurred without the additional incentive provided by emission reductions credits. LED lighting can achieve CDM, because 100W LED lighting can replace 300W Mercury lighting or 250W HPS lighting, save 80% to 95% energy. According to our energy bureau information, to produce 1 kWh energy will create 0.638 kg CO2. For example, if using LED lightings with some quantity to replace Mercury or HPS lightings and achieve saving 100,000 kWh energy totally, 100,000 x 0.638 = 63,800 kgs CO2 are reduced, which meet Clean Development Mechanism request.

La Chispa: alternative living in Andalucia

La Chispa magazine:

Launched in 2002 La Chispa has become the premiere resource for information on natural living in Andalucía. Its broad appeal, freshness and unique position in a rapidly growing market has brought it a loyal following among readers and advertisers alike.

A very 21st century publication La Chispa has expanded into other media to continue to grow and develop, launching an online resource directory, bringing alternative Andalucía to the small screen and running popular healing arts festivals.

Circulation
La Chispa has grown over the years to meet demand and increase response for our advertisers. From 5,000 copies in 2002, we made a 50% increase in 2004 and a further 15% in 2006 to our current total of 8,500 magazines published every two months. Projected growth is for 10,000 copies distributed from Tarifa to Granada.

Readership
“In our opinion, La Chispa is a must-have magazine, being one of the most popular of all the magazines on the coast.” Justin Manners, Just Media.

Readers of La Chispa are informed and conscious, dynamic individuals who believe in making responsible, sustainable choices in their lives. La Chispa is important to these people because it provides them with the information they need to live the lives they choose, whether it be for finding organic food, personal development or healthy and holistic living.

Tree planting – being environmentally aware we actively support these schemes
Raising eco-awareness: helping individuals and businesses to be more socially responsible we offer consultancy services. From advice on green finance to recycled point of sale material La Chispa has it all at its fingertips. “When we were setting up our eco-centre Alma Verde in Sotogrande, La Chispa provided an invaluable service putting us in contact with the Spanish network of eco-suppliers,” Mike Slaughter, owner of Alma Verde.

Other media projects
TV – bringing alternative Andalucía to the small screen with a documentary series for Living in Spain TV

WOPAA magazine – La Chispa is also developing new publishing projects, and is currently production designer for a new natural health magazine for the UK market.

Festival
La Chispa festival is a unique event, a weekend celebration of healing arts, culture and music bringing together a community of conscious people and also taking our message of sustainable, holistic living out to the public.

World music, artisan’s market, therapists, healing areas, activities, workshops and talks provide the basis of the weekend, bringing together a diverse mix of people from all over southern Spain. It provides a showcase for many of our advertisers to demonstrate their products and services.

La Chispa Website
A complete redesign in 2007 makes http://www.lachispa.net/ the premiere portal for people looking for information and contact details of all eco-holistic businesses and services in Andalucía.
The comprehensive Resource Directory, carefully categorised makes it easy for users to find what they are looking for, while the features, news and events listings make the web site attractive and interesting for people browsing for information.

With over 20,000 unique visitors a month we have already established a strong presence in the market.

Our newsletter goes out to nearly 1,000 people every fortnight and provides another excellent promotional tool for advertisers.

We can design campaigns around print and online media to provide the most cost effective and direct marketing to a targeted and relevant audience.

La Chispa Distribution
Ecology, sustainability, organic food, green living, natural and complementary therapies are all themes that La Chispa covers. Many of these up until recently were considered alternative, but society is rapidly changing to recognise the importance of our stewardship on planet earth and taking up the challenge to make sure that our children enjoy the same quality of life as we do.
