The Best of Argentina and Real Madrid with Don Alfredo di Stefano

The Best of Argentina:
Don Alfredo Di Stefano, the famous football legend
4 July 1926 – 7 July 2014

In memoriam of one of the best Argentine-Spanish footballers and coach Don Alfredo Di Stefano. The world has lost the famous footballer on 7 July 2014, widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all times. Don Alfredo Di Stefano was most associated with Real Madrid and was instrumental in their domination of the European Champions' Cup during the 1950s. Don Alfredo Di Stéfano played international football mostly for Spain, but he also played for Argentina and Colombia. We will greatly miss Don Alfredo... Argentina can be very proud of this amazing man.

Alejandro Vega Martinelli and Maria Petrak, Founder of The Best of the World Network had the great honor to visit the Veterans of Real Madrid and the unique opportunity to meet Don Alfredo di Stefano in person in 2009.

L.I.V.E. Christmas appeal for Malaga Children´s Home

ORPHANAGE CHRISTMAS GIFT APPEAL
Christmas Gift appeal for L.I.V.E. charity in support of the local Malaga Orphanage "Cuidad de los Ninos".

The Christmas party was held on 8th December and this year more than ever, they really do need as much public awareness of the appeal as possible. Further information about other fundraising activities going on in December can be found at http://www.squidoo.com/L-I-V-E and
http://www.live-spain.org/

L.I.V.E is the local ex-pat charity supporting the Malaga Children’s Home “La Cuidad de los Ninos”.
Every year, the charity holds a Christmas party for nearly 200 children that the Children’s Home cares for.

This year's party was held in Nerja on Tuesday 8th December.
The children of “La Cuidad de los Ninos” have been rescued by the local authority from terrible, inhumane depravation. There are more than 50 residents living in the Home run by Brother Juan. In addition, the Home provides a safe haven for food, clothing, warmth and schooling for a further 100+ children brought into the Home on a daily basis from the nearby poverty-stricken shanty town.

The children in the home range from aged 2 – 18.
WE NEED YOUR HELP…

We are asking for donations of gifts and presents for their Annual Christmas Party.
Please wrap each gift and clearly mark whether it is for a boy or a girl.

“These children have so very little of their own” says Brian Marsh, Chairman of L.I.V.E. “if the ex pat community can contribute something, anything, we can send a strong signal to these young boys and girls that despite the difficult financial times we find ourselves in someone still cares about them”.

As always throughout the year, we are also keen for donations of clothing, toiletries, food or money. The Home and the resident children are very much dependent on your donations.

Drop off points for donation of presents and other goods are

Money donations can be made by visiting the L.I.V.E. website http://www.live-spain.org/

We would also like to take this opportunity to give a big THANK YOU to everyone who has donated money, goods and time to L.I.V.E in 2009. Your efforts have made a huge difference to the children and are appreciated. Every little helps!

The Best of 0Jazz Appreciation Society

THE "JAZZ APPRECIATION SOCIETY"

The Jazz Appreciation Society was founded, in 1992, by Brian Parker and Alice Babs Sjoblom.
Brian Parker was born in London. He plays Bass, Violin and Guitar. Playing bass, He took up jazz in 1953 when he joined the Galleon Jazz Band in Tooting London to finance his studies in Architecture. He then, joined Sandy Brown's Band and, at the same time, he had his own modern jazz quartet band. Later on he formed a mainstream band, with Pat Hawes, they featured on radio and recorded records etc: It was probably, the first mainstream band in England. He retires from music in 1959 to concentrate on his career as an Arhitect he retired to the Costa del Sol in 1983, in 1992 he started promoting Jazz on the Costa del Sol, and created the Jazz Appreciation Society, and started to play the bass again with his own trio, as well as running his radio programme - All That Jazz - on Onda Cero, International.

Since 2000, he has been involved in setting up an Internet Jazz Radio, running 24 hours a day, and so has not played for a while. Amongst others, he has played with Humphrey Lyttleton, Louis Armstrong and Lionel Hampton. He toured with Mick Mulligan's Band with Geroge Melley. Also, Big Bill Broonzy, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee.

Alice Babs Sjoblom was born in 1924. She studied at the Royal Academy. From 1956 she was active in fllms, TV and on stage. Between 1959 and 1963 she joined forces with violinist Sven Asmussen and guitarist Ulrik Neumann to form Swe-Danes. The purity of her voice and her sense of swing, attracted the attention of Duke Ellington, with whom she made many appearances. She recorded with him on the Reprise label and appeared in some of the Sacred Concerts, including the second, in New York City in 1968, and the third, in London in 1973. She hosted the International Ellington Conference in Stockholm in 1994. She was appointed as Royal Court Singer, the only non-opera singer to be given that title, by the King of Sweden in 1972. She was elected to the Royal Academy in 1974. Ellington remarked that 'She is a performer without measure. She can sing anything she sees or hears, Opera, Bach or Jazz"."What has Alice Babs got, that other singers lack?" A reporter asked Ellington later. "EVERYTHING!" The composer replied.

The original idea of the Society was to assemble a group of Jazz lovers, who could gather together regularly to discuss Jazz, listen to records, tapes, CD's and watch videos and, generally, enjoy the company of likeminded people. It was hoped that the Society would, one day, develop and provide a ready Audience toenable it's members to bring international jazz musicians to the coast for everyone to enjoy. The meeting place has changed quite a few times over the years, and will now be meeting at the Benavista Country Club - Restaurant, where the meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month, except July and August.

The Meetings start at 8.00pm with videos of great Jazz Artists and last until about 10.00 then there is live Jazz with members of the Jazz Society, Food and refreshments are obtainable, from an extensive menu, throughout the meeting. However, if you prefer to eat earlier, then you will find that there will be some background jazz, from a CD or Audio Tape, from around 7.00 pm, until the meeting starts. If you are a jazz afficionado, and would care to join us at one of our meetings, please ring Brian Parker, on 952 785616, so that seating can be arranged to enable you to enjoy All That Jazz!!

It was hoped that the Society would, one day, develop and provide a ready Audience to enable it's members to bring international jazz musicians to the coast for everyone to enjoy.

LIVE Charity press release

PRESS RELEASE: LIVE Charity event
A Step nearer the swimming pool for the Children’s Home

LIVE, the ex pat charity supporting the Malaga Children’s Home, took a step nearer to raising the money for a new swimming pool for La Ciudad de los Niños at the fun day in Torrox.

Enjoying a balmy day At the El Ancla beach restaurant, supporters made another €1500 towards the swimming pool appeal. With music provided by local bands, sideshows, a BBQ, and an array of stalls to entertain and amuse, a crowd of well-wishers turned out to support the event and meet some of the children from La Ciudad de Los Niños.

“Everyone enjoyed the day, especially the children, they spent hours playing splat the rat, pitching horseshoes, beat the goalie, darting the card or simply enjoying some great music. It was a pleasure seeing their smiling faces when they finally left clutching a mountain of prizes and sweets they had won on the sideshows”, said Brian Marsh, chairman of LIVE

“ The support was amazing and I want to thank everyone who worked so hard to make a great day at Torrox. We want to have the pool installed for when the school summer holiday starts at the end of June. We still need to raise more money so if anyone wants to help they should visit our website http://www.live-spain.org/ to click and donate ”.

The Home on the outskirts of Malaga has lost most of its sports facilities due to the construction of the new motorway.

The club is very much for classic car ‘users’ and ‘drivers’ and is proud of that.
The Chairman of the ‘Classic Car Club of Andalucia’ is classic-car rally-driver Ian Giles. His formidable team had the vision to start this club as there is no other club in the area that has similar aims or such a varied and well organised programme of events. Their impressive calendar for 2008 and 2009 is already full and it includes regular monthly club meetings. The first Tuesday of every month sees a club dinner and social evening at ‘El Chaparral Golf Club’ in Mijas Costa where members and their guests can enjoy an excellent evening and dinner with like-minded, fellow enthusiasts. There will always be a classic car ‘Run’ on the Saturday following the Tuesday club-night.

Special events will be held on numerous occasions throughout the year and these include a ‘Summer ball’, a Summer BBQ and pic-nic, a Christmas Party that is already organised, a Concours D’élegance that will be held in conjunction with the ‘British Society’ and others.
Enthusiasts from many European countries have already signed up bringing such classics as AC Cobras, Mercedes Sports, MG’s, several Jaguar E-Types, Morgans, Triumphs and Sunbeams. American classics are also in the club including a stunning, original Corvette, a rare Shelby 500GT and a Shelby Cobra. One member alone has a collection of some 50 classics so variety is assured!

Positive Lives project

Positive Lives is a unique international project that photographs and documents the social and emotional impact of the global HIV & AIDS epidemic, illuminating positive human responses to this world crisis.

As a collection of over one thousand images and text, Positive Lives focuses on personal stories of those at the heart of the HIV & AIDS epidemic.

Photography is a powerful, universal language that crosses all cultures and social differences and reaches the heart and spirit. With or without text, viewers can bring their own experiences to the images and engage with them - and in turn, use the images to begin telling and sharing their own stories.

Since its beginnings in the UK in 1993, the exhibition has portrayed the tremendous courage of people living with HIV & AIDS, and those who care for them, from different communities around the world.

Concordia Marquez´s dream, founder of this Asociation, is to stop cruelty to all animals. "If we take to court the people that cause animals pain its all worth it.
